St. Patrick’s Day is also known as St. Bardley’s Day and Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig. It is a festival to commemorate the bishop of St. Patrick (St. Bode), the patron saint of Ireland. It is held on March 17 every year. In 432 AD, St. Patrick was sent by the Pope to Ireland to persuade the Irish to convert to Catholicism. After St. Patrick came ashore from Wicklow, angry local non-Catholics attempted to stone him to death. St. Patrick was not afraid of danger and immediately picked off a three-leaf clover, which vividly clarified the doctrine of the “Trinity” of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Therefore, the clover has become a symbol of Ireland, and at the same time, the Irish were deeply moved by his speech and accepted the grand baptism of St. Patrick. On March 17, 461, St. Patrick passed away. In order to commemorate him, the Irish designated this day as St. Patrick’s Day.

This holiday originated in Ireland at the end of the 5th century. This day later became the Irish National Day. It was also a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a legal holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Montserrat, and Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada. Although St. Patrick’s Day is widely celebrated in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States and New Zealand, it is not a statutory holiday. Because many Irish residents celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, it is highly valued and commemorated by the government. In addition to Ireland’s grand celebration to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, other countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, Germany, Japan, and New Zealand are also paying close attention to this holiday. In order to welcome St. Patrick’s Day this year, Chicago once again dyed the river green to celebrate the annual carnival.
