Mother’s Day is a holiday celebrated to thank mothers, and the dates for Mother’s Day are different around the world. Mothers usually receive gifts from children on this day; in many people’s minds, carnations are regarded as one of the most suitable flowers for mothers. So what is the origin of Mother’s Day?

Mother’s Day originated in Greece, and the ancient Greeks paid tribute to Hera, the mother of the gods in Greek mythology. The meaning is: remember our mother and her greatness.

In the middle of the 17th century, Mother’s Day spread to England, and the British took the fourth Sunday of Lent as Mother’s Day. On this day, young people who are away from home will return home and bring some small gifts to their mothers.

Modern Mother’s Day is initiated by Anna Jarvis, who has been unmarried all her life and has always been with her mother. ANNA’s mother was a very compassionate and kind-hearted lady. She proposed to set up a day to commemorate the great mothers who silently made sacrifices. Unfortunately, she passed away before her wish was fulfilled. Anna started to organize celebration activities in 1907 and applied to make Mother’s Day a legal holiday. The festival officially began in West Virginia and Pennsylvania in the United States on May 10, 1908. In 1913, the US Congress determined the second Sunday in May as the statutory Mother’s Day. Anna’s mother’s favorite flower during her lifetime was carnations, and carnations became a symbol of Mother’s Day.

In different countries, the date of Mother’s Day is different. The date accepted by most countries is the second Sunday of May. Many countries have set March 8 as their own country’s Mother’s Day. On this day, the mother, as the protagonist of the festival, usually receives greeting cards and flowers made by the children themselves as a holiday blessing.
