“May 1st International Labor Day”, also known as International Workers’ Day or May Day, is a national holiday in more than 80 countries in the world. It is set on May 1st each year. It is a holiday shared by working people all over the world.
Labor Day originated from the mid-19th century, when American capitalism continued to experience economic crises, tens of thousands of factories closed down, and millions of workers were unemployed. The wages of employed workers have been declining, while working hours have been repeatedly extended, reaching a maximum of 18 hours. Therefore, on May 1, 1886, an unprecedented strike of more than 400,000 workers in 11,500 companies in the United States called for the implementation of an 8-hour work system. The strike caused a strong response in the United States and the international labor movement and finally won.
In July 1889, at the inaugural meeting of the Second International organized by Engels in Paris, a historic resolution was passed: “May 1st” was designated “International Labor Day”, or “May 1″ for short. This decision immediately received positive responses from workers from all over the world. The struggle for workers has moved from the United States to the world, and more and more countries have joined the ranks of commemorating “May 1st”.
On May 1, 1890, the working class of European and American countries took the lead to take the lead in the streets, holding grand demonstrations and rallies to fight for their legal rights and interests. Since then, on this day, working people from all over the world will gather and march to celebrate. May 1st became a day of international significance.
